Chapter 17: The Point that Everything goes wrong

As expected, the memories of a potted plant.

She waited there once more, gazing upon crystal…

-Plants don’t have eyes though, and she wasn’t even that kind of plant-

…basking the presence of the crystal battery of the laboratory, as always that view, though she could not see it yet, was before her. Yet that was not the centre of her life.

-Being a potted plant, what most concerns such beings is water, light and soil-

Yes. That man, the one she loved.

-What?-

The one who loved her. The one cared for both her and the core. Though, she was glad he didn’t try grilling chicken on her. Being a humble potted plant, she wasn’t nearly hot enough for that.

-Hmm, good thing there’s a nice reflection on the battery in this memory, gives me a good look at what kind of plant she was… Ehhhhh? EHHHHHH?-

YES! The plant was none other than a kind of herb fern! A fern that is a herb! In fact, in its native dimension, it was even called herb fern. In most dimensions it is just thought that it makes your mouth a little cool, like some kind of weird mint flavour. HOWEVER! In actuality! The humble herb fern can be used in the place of many herbs in herbal healing salves!

You know, like ones for small cuts and bruises.

It really isn’t that useful.

-How did it end up so deadly? How come it managed to survive even under the curses and consumption?-

That man. He who gave her water, he who tended to her. He was once more buffing the battery. The plant however was not jealous. She knew that she rated higher than the battery, after all, he never talked to the battery.

-That’s one lonely man. Wait a moment, how come these memories are visual? Normally with plants the memories are all touch based.-

He lifted the bucket that he had placed to collect the water that had fallen from him cleaning the battery and… drank. Not all of it of course. He was going to share it, as he always did, with her. He poured the bucket on…

-DID THE PLACE I WAS RUNNING HAVE NO STANDARDS AT ALL? HOW LONG WAS THIS GUY DOING THAT! THAT WATER WOULD BE HIGHLY CONTAMINATED WITH MAGIC! NO WONDER I CAN SEE HER MEMORIES!-

Another day, she waited for that man…

-I’m no longer surprised that she won out over everything that got eaten by her curse. Now I’m surprised that something didn’t happen earlier. Was I such a bad doctor, did I run such a terrible research place? Wait, no rather than something really sinister, isn’t it just embezzlement? All those U#whatever, those could have only been one thing right? When you think of one horn, isn’t that what you think about?-

She was sure that the battery wasn’t as loved as her. Surely she was the only one in his heart…

-Then there was all that stuff about the shadow. There was that bit about a brilliant mind so cursed? If it was my lab, then wouldn’t I have been the brilliant mind? I may be undead, but I’m not cursed! Wait, isn’t being undead a curse? No, you can be cursed to become undead, but… eh? I didn’t become a skeleton because of a curse did I?-

He poured the bucket…

-Ah enough, I’ll just go forwards to the point that everything goes wrong!-

He poured the bucket…

He poured the bucket…

He poured the bucket…

The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…The bucket…

-Ah, here’s something different. I think I never want to see another bucket for at least a year, maybe two-

Well, that’s the last drink we’re having together here little miss fern. There’ll be an inspection when the exodus starts, so I’ll not be able to bring you with me then. Don’t worry though, I’ll be back for you and the battery, can’t believe they’re leaving it here. Fools all of them. They’re too scared of him, but not me. Everything will be fine if I just leave it a while, so I’ll be hiding you, just wait for me alright, you can welcome me home!”

That man did not return.

-Oh dear-

She waited.

-Well, there’s probably going to be a lot of waiting-

She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited. She waited.

She began to clean the battery, hoping she would return.

He did not return.

She climbed up, taking root atop the battery and she cleaned, she did it for so long that she fell into a deep sleep while cleaning. She was not aware, but the memory remained… he did not come, but someone else did.

A memory without sight. A memory with an ominous air. A memory with the smell of a curse. A memory with the taste of a shadow.

In that murky memory a voice spoke.

What a shame, here I am, all dolled up and ready to go, and not a patient in sight. How heartless and cruel, only leaving the dead behind. Ohoho, what is this? Converting a battery into a bomb? Did they really think that would work. Ah, I see, it draws things in. Hmm, well I guess I should defuse it, it’d hurt a bit if it went off. Well then, there’s a hunger in this crystal, and… Ohohoh, perhaps I have a patient after all.

-This… is my voice? No not quite, it is similar though. Is this the evil brother plot? A clone? My shadow? I’ve got a shadow though. Could it actually be me?… I hope not.-

What a cute little fern. What cute little feelings. How about I connect your feelings and the battery. Annnnd… done. You’ll be a little hungry when you wake but you should give your prince a wonderful welcome from which you’ll never part! Aren’t I just the most kind of all people? After all, you’ll be able to be together with him and so many others forever!

Perhaps you need just a little curse to draw him in though. Ah… such a let down. Oh well, that was amusing at least.

-Now I know what was familiar. The curse. The essence of the curse was familiar. I’m familiar with the construction of those curses… right, that’s enough of these memories. I don’t even need to be inside to do the operation.-

He pulled himself away from the memories, away from the mind, the heart her body.

-The problem is the crystal battery! It has to go!, LOCALE ANAESTHESIA-

After Dr. Bones climbed out of the smoking ruins of the laboratory, he had one on hand a red baseball bat and in his other arm, a potted plant. It was however, no ordinary herb fern, but a fern with the head of a maiden.

He returned to the coffin, and moments later the coffin opened a tunnel and was gone from the world of Kigan and the dimension it was within.
