Chapter 35: A Sweet End

Long long ago there was a mighty mage who wandered the dimensions.

He despaired.

Wherever he went he would find cataclysmic battles between powerful beings, with the weak perishing for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Indeed, he was involved in such battles himself on occasion. After all, a powerful mage is also a whole body of useful material, especially one with the knowing of moving through dimensions.

This mage, name scoured from the minds of all, through tragic circumstance defied destruction and became a spell that would stabilise and protect. He was not alone, for many others walked the same path as him, and in turn made the same sacrifice he did.

Yet, the spell could only come to form when the beings in a dimension were not native.

The spell has many names, but one of the more common ones is Dimensional Transient Preservation.

A living spell that spans many dimensions. This is what dimensional travellers fear the least, as compared to any other safeguards, it tends to just make destruction pass through a dimension like a hand through a ghost.

Many other protections are significantly more hostile to dimensional tresspassers. The DTP however exists only to safeguard the weak and the land.

No sky shattered. No soil sundered.

This spell swept over the area, and faint pale transparent scales covered everything. So then, when Sugar Draggy let forth a sugar crystal blast from his breath, it passed right through everything. Well, except Sourgum Draggy.

The rancid wurm was knocked into the sky, but as it did so it spat a luminous carbonated bile at Sugar. A wave of arms and a storm of sugar appeared before the bile. The bile was mostly neutralized by this. But the remainder of the storm turned into a worm of spoiled sugar. This twisted through the air at Sugar. Sourgum followed up this attack by coiling around Sugar!

Yet, undaunted, Sugar grabbed both the sugarworm and Sourgum and started to tie them together even as they tried to crush him. Dreadful creaking sounds came from Sugar and huge chunks fell as sugar cubes to the ground below.

He persisted and finished the knot and then pulled, causing a strangled sound to come from both creatures. Yet he did not stop tightening, indeed the rest of Sourgum’s body was swelling quite comically.

Finally Sourgum’s body exploded and many differently sized poisonous sourgum ‘treats’ fled from Sugar. The sweet dragon himself gave chase with a mighty roar and an enchanted rake of claws that crystallized everything they passed into sugar.

Many of the sourgums were taken out this way, and fell from the sky. Yet as Sugar cried in triumph something speared up through his right side, only barely missing his head!

It was the body that the sourgums had exploded out from. Sourgum had kept control of it just to sneak attack Sugar!

<HAHAHA FOOLISH UNFLAVOURFUL FOOL, BE CORRUPTED ONCE MORE!>

Sugar roared in pain, but the roar changed to words.

<ME CORRUPTED? SINCE YOU’VE BEEN FOOLISH ENOUGH TO RETURN TO MY BODY FACE MY ENDLESS SWEETNESS!>

Sugar laughed and began to shine and the smell of sugar was far, far too extreme.

<N-NO HOW CAN YOU BE THIS SWEET! IT ISN’T POSSIBLE MY TAINTED SOURNESS CANNOT OVERCOME THIS. NOOOOOOO>

While the main body was distracted, Sugar candied the rest of the sourgums before they could reform into a proper body.

<AHHHHHHH> Sourgum let out one last despairing cry as he was turned from gum into candy.

The head of Sourgum flopped down and the illness made manifest was no more, rather the now candied wurm had become a second head and tail for Sugar Draggy.
