Caravamel Part 31

Chapter 30: Fishing but not finding the reaction you want.

Sound returned to the valley of the mushroom trees and the foolbears, the thrum of the heavy metal fish once again broke through the trickle of the jade river. The creatures of the woods got back to the business of eating and avoiding being eaten.

Kejo blinked.

Nothing seemed amiss. It was as if nothing happened. Kejo almost thought that he had imagined the whole thing. Except those words. Those words still remained. Preserved in his mind.

-Preserve from preserving-

Kejo jumped and spun around. Grinnerel had not returned, the words only sounded like they had again been whispered in his ears. Kejo scratched his ears and retracted his head further into his brass pot.

He spent the rest of his watch manically pacing around the caravamel getting startled at every little foolbear growl and distant trod of appendage on earth. Kejo eventually got too tired, and thus his worrying watch was over. He was so tired, that as he roused Turmeric, he forgot to say anything about his encounter with the Dark Herald.

Turmeric blearily looked around for a time, going into full alertness. Before however, he carefully moved closer to the jade river. He stared at the water for a while before he hovered his tail over the river. Instantly a metal fish leapt up bent on eating Turmeric’s tail!

He was having none of that, and his tail curved, and with a cracking sound, whipped the fish up onto the riverbank, then swatting it further from the river. The fish flopped about, but didn’t last long outside of the river.

The fish was quite bulbous, with a long thin tail that ended in a fairly oval fin. The metal scales of the fish looked quite inedible, Turmeric was just about to investigate whether the fish was metal on the inside too when the sound of a violin wafted through gently oppressing all other sounds, it played a song that boded ill!

Turmeric turned and saw the grin of Grinnerel the Dark Herald.

“What warning?” Turmeric asked directly.

Grinnerel almost messed up in playing its music.

-Preserve from preserving-

After delivering its warning, Grinnerel left, it never liked over-confident unfearful people. It didn’t even bother with much theatrics instead just vanishing abruptly.

Tumeric sat down on his haunches and frowned, the metal fish forgotten. He spent the rest of the watch pondering Grinnerel’s warning and keeping an eye out for any danger. His newly ascended mind went around and around in circles, trying to figure out the warning, finally his head swimming, he woke Ismi to take over the watch. He was so absorbed in trying to figure out the warning that he forgot to even tell her about it.

He forgot about the heavy metal fish too, and Ismi ended up slipping on it.
